The sound sculpture Ad lib. combines a medical machine for automatic pulmonary ventilation with a few organ pipes that play a musical chord in a continuous rhythm of mechanical breathing. In this way, they create an artificial organ that is metaphorically a mechanical requiem that is constantly heard.
The title of the work, Ad lib., an abbreviation of the Latin expression ‘ad libitum’, is a musical inscription that allows the performer to interpret freely, for example by repeating certain bars of the score at will. The Latin term ‘ad libitum’ literally means ‘at one’s own discretion’ and is used to express the freedom of a person to act as he or she sees fit in a particular context.
The sculpture is intended to draw attention to the situation in which the survival of people with critical health problems depends on the respiratory apparatus, and thus on the judgment of those who care for them.
The organ plays a quintacord in F major (F – C), referring to Johannes Brahms’ Op. 45 Ein Deutsches Requiem (German Requiem) for ‘soloists, chorus, orchestra and organ ad libitum’. At the same time, the two organ pipes are rhythmically activated by the mechanical breathing of a lung ventilator, adding the notes A and D, which complement the F major chord, and at the same time creating a slight dissonance.
The project is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia and the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Ljubljana.
