**********************************************
Mnemosis is a photographic series by Andrej Lamut, in which he deliberately moves away from depicting the material reality to unveil vast inner worlds full of inexplicable, often fictitious images. In the series, the author explores daytime parahypnagogia, an altered state of consciousness between sleep and wakefulness, usually accompanied by flashes of thought, insight or creativity, which are quickly forgotten once the episode has passed.
Lamut understands Mnemosis as the embodiment of what remains after a daytime parahypnagogic experience: the visual materialisation of the distant, inaccessible thought in one’s mind. Photographs from the series do not try to recreate the mental images seen during such episodes, but rather create the atmosphere of experiencing the said mental state. They carry no visual traces of time, space or a specific event. The viewer is left with an impression that what is seen in the images is infinitely repeating; a motif captured in a never-ending circle of its own existence.
Andrej Lamut is a Slovenian photographer exploring analogue and digital techniques. Rather than merely carriers of meaning, Lamut perceives photographs as physical objects that should be seen, felt, and experienced. To him, the process of creating a work and its presentation are just as important as the image itself. Lamut graduated with honours from the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2016, and has received several awards for his work, including the Prešeren Award for Students by his alma mater, and an award for best book design in the special editions and monographs category at the 33rd Slovenian Book Fair. As an emerging artist, he represented Slovenia in the first cycle of the European Photo Based Platform PARALLEL, exhibiting his work in venues and events including the FORMAT and Organ Vida festivals in the UK and Croatia, respectively. In the last two years, Lamut has run several photography workshops for the UGM Art Gallery in Maribor. Since June 2019, he has been represented by Galerija Fotografija in Ljubljana.
